Toys Revisited
Have you ever noticed the shift of the toy business? Originating with the fifties, then sixties, into the seventies and eighties, in come the nineties and finally 2000 and beyond, toys have seriously molded our world.
Do you recall when Barbie, Play-Doh, and Skateboards came out? The correct answer is in the 1950s. In addition to these toys were Hula Hoops, Mr. Potato Head and Pez. Of course there are more, however these are just a couple from that decade. Children could be seen all over having fun with their toys. Inside or out, these were several simple forms of entertainment. Some still exist presently, but in a more contemporary and sleeker forms.
The 1960s also supplied several good toys as well, for example, Super Ball, LEGOs, Sea Monkeys, Easy Bake Oven, and Operation. One can see the jump in inventiveness and creativity from the 1950’s to the 1960’s. Well it gets even more state-of-the-art with the arrival of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. With the 1970s we have Atari, Uno, Star Wars Action Figures, Simon, and Dungeons & Dragons. The 1980s introduced to Cabbage Patch Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Koosh Balls, All Terrain Armored Transport and Pictionary. Finally came the nineties with Pogs, Tickle Me Elmo, Beanie Babies, Buzz Lightyear and Power Rangers. All of these decades designed fun for kids that kept their imagination going strong.
Currently we are engulfed by Play Station, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, and Leap Frog products. One time when walking through Toys R Us they had a T-Rex on display that moves, walks, lights up, and makes noises. Don’t we recall a time when one had to create those noises for themselves? Now the inventiveness is given to us and we no longer have to think, it just exists. No more portraying, technology has turned it into real play.
